Where to Stay in Anchorage, Alaska

Are you planning a trip to Anchorage, Alaska? Finding the right place to stay can be a challenge. Anchorage boasts a variety of hotels, Inns, AirBNB and VRBO accommodations to fit any type of traveler, from downtown and suburban areas to the edges of the nearby wilderness. Here are some options for where to stay in Anchorage.

Downtown Anchorage: If you want to be in the middle of the action with walkable nightlife, restaurants, and activities just a block or two from your room, then downtown Anchorage is the place for you. Convenience comes with a cost as even the most modest properties demand a premium, but it is worth it. There are many properties in the downtown area. The most posh include the Hotel Captain Cook, the Marriott Downtown, the Sheraton, and the Hilton.

Quirky, but still nice places to stay downtown, such as the Historic Anchorage Hotel (famously haunted), the Westmark (more remarkable for location than anything else), and one of my favorites, The Copper Whale Inn (some rooms have a shared bathroom situation, but the family feel is welcoming) offer easy access to all the city has to offer.

Less obvious choices include hotels that are just slightly out of the main area, but still walkable, for example the Comfort Inn Ship Creek is spread out along the banks of our local fishing creek featuring a paved trail. The Inlet Tower Hotel & Suites and the Clarion have easy access to the Delany Park Strip and each have benefits to being just a little further away from the city center.

If you have a car, that makes the other areas of town more accessible to you. You’ll find more availability in midtown and near the airport. There is a whole slew of hotels, some fairly new, in the mid-town area. The Hyatt Place, Hilton Garden Inn, Four Points by Sheraton, and Crown Plaza mid-town are just a few! My favorite hotel at the airport is The Lakefront on the banks of Lake Spenard where you can have a glass of wine or beer as you watch the floatplanes taking off and landing all day. Other good options at the airport are the Courtyard by Marriott and the Holiday Inn Express.

For those who want a more secluded experience, the Alyeska Resort in Girdwood is just a one hour drive from downtown Anchorage (but is still within the municipality) and is a luxury experience with a Nordic Spa, Aerial Tramway, and stunning views of the surrounding mountains, glaciers, and wilderness.

Bed and Breakfasts: If you’re looking for a more intimate experience, Anchorage also has several bed and breakfasts scattered throughout the city, including Girdwood near the Alyeska Resort. Bed & Breakfasts, Apartments, VRBO’s and Airbnb’s can offer a more personalized touch and are often perfect for couples or small groups. These tend to be more easily accessible if you have a rental car.

Campsites and RV Parks For the more adventurous traveler, there are plenty of campsites and RV parks in the area for a true outdoor experience. The Golden Nugget RV Park and the Ship Creek RV Park (near the train tracks) are just a couple of the options available. Be aware that they are “urban” campsites and both would require transportation to get from them campsite to the downtown area.

No matter where you choose to stay in Anchorage, you should book your stay soon as room in Anchorage are going fast! Here is a great place to put in your dates and see prices and availability! Hotels in Anchorage! You’re sure to have an unforgettable experience. From the city to the wilderness, this Alaskan gem has it all.
